Before I Fall - Written Movie Review

Eddie here. Tonight, I'm reviewing Before I Fall, starring Zoey Deutch , Halston Sage, and Elena Kampouris and it's based off of the 2010 Novel written by Lauren Oliver. Samantha (Zoey Deutch) seems to have it all going in her life until one night, everything changes in a blink of an eye when she tragically dies in a car crash, magically waking up to find herself reliving the same day over and over again. As Samantha tries to untangle the mystery behind what's happening to her, she unravels secrets of the people closest to her in hoping to fix it all. This film looked interesting when I seen the trailer with the whole Groundhog Day-type storyline, but at the same time I was a bit worried because we get these teenage thriller-type films a lot in the past, but they almost always end up being terrible in the end. I felt this film was just ok; very average and really forgettable in the end. Like I said, I do love the whole Groundhog Day approach with the storyline and the cinematography was absolutely beautiful in how they captured the Pacific Northwest. It's got that crystal clear, dark tone like we see with the Fifty Shades movies. I thought the cast did really good with their performances and the story did keep me watching, even though later on I started to lose interest at times. One issue with this film I did have is that I was thrown off by the trailers and the film itself. The trailers have you thinking you're in for an all-out thriller. It does have that, but for a very small part as it deals with teen romance and learning to really love the things that really matter more than just being the most popular girl and going out with the best looking guy in school. I got the message, but it just ended up not being much of my taste as it got to the middle part of the film. Keep in mind, I'm not familiar with the book whatsoever, so that might be the issue. Plus I felt like the film started to feel very predictable as it went along and it left out an explanation as to why she is having to relive the same day over and over again. I also didn't get why it had to end the way it did and I would love to hear someone who really knows the book to explain why certain things went down the way it did. Anyways, it's a watchable film and it probably would be a best fit for a date night with the love of your life. I'm gonna give Before I Fall a 5.5/10. What are your thoughts on it? Leave me a comment below and I'll see you on my next review.
