Game Night - Written Movie Review

Eddie Williams

Tonight I'm reviewing the 2018 comedy crime film, Game Night, directed by Jonathan Michael Goldstein and John Francis Daley (co-writers of Horrible Bosses 1&2) and stars Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman, Jesse Plemons, and Kyle Chandler. Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie's (Rachel McAdams) game night gets taken up a notch when Max's brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler) arranges a murder mystery party, complete with fake plugs and fake federal agents. When Brooks gets kidnapped, it's supposed to be part of the game. They soon learn that the game may not be as fake as they expected it to be. I've gotta say, I actually enjoyed this movie. For one, I like the directors' involvement in this film because Horrible Bosses 1 and 2, which they were the co-writers of, are some of my favorite comedy films of the last seven years. It seems to me when these two are involved together in making a film, they like to have a lot of fun (aside from Vacation (2015)). The same goes for the cast members. I thought Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams worked well with their chemistry and both were hysterical together. I pretty much enjoyed the majority of the other cast members aside from one person, which I'll get into later. I was surprised with how well done the cinematography was and the way they worked the camera; it's rare to say that for a comedy related film. Speaking of which, I was expecting it to be a typical raunchy comedy we get yearly, but the story focuses more on the mystery, which I found fun. I was surprised it wasn't a full-on comedy as I expected it to be. I loved the board game theme throughout the movie, especially the opening title. Now onto my cons. I was having so much fun but they really rushed that ending. My only guess is that they either ran out of time, money, or both. In addition, I had an issue with one particular co-star that wasn't mentioned above that I found annoying in some parts. Other than that, it was very enjoyable.

Final Grade:
